Model 329-2 Automated Viscometer is designed for high volume testing of used lubricating oils. Two constant baths, controlled at 40°C and 100°C, respectively, each holding 6 capillary viscometers. The viscometers are controlled by Windows based proprietary software that is easily interfaced with any LIMS. The system offers a higher sample testing rate and increased accuracy.
Each viscometer tube allows testing of oils over a wide range of viscosities, from 2.5 to 800 cSt. Unknown sample can be tested without the need of determining which capillary tube should be used. Excellent bath temperature control is provided by a digital indicating controller.
Due the proprietary tube's small size (0.75mL), the test sample heats rapidly to the precise bath temperature. Measurement is not made until temperature stabilization has been achieved. This is in contrast to other viscometers in which the heating time varies with viscosity. Typical testing labs are achieving 160+ high accuracy viscosity measurements per hour using the Model 329-2.
For improved operator efficiency, the software features automatic queuing of test samples. The large LCD display at each position prompts the operator for the next sample by ID number. The system automatically recognizes when a sample is present, performs the test, and logs the result with no buttons to press.
The viscometer cleaning is accomplished automatically without solvent leakage, spills, or fumes. No hood is required. Furthermore, each viscometer is automatically cleaned and dried independently while the remaining five are testing samples.
The software provides full results data capture with optional LIMS capability. The software performs the viscosity index calculation as per ASTM D2270. Testing temperature(s) and viscosity index calculation are selectable on a sample-by-sample basis.
The unique software feature is a calculation of the proprietary Confidence Factor (CF) for each test. The CF routine detects and rejects results which are questionable due to heavy contamination of debris, water, or entrained gases. The CF routine also provides an indication of when a viscometer tube is shifting out of calibration due to soot or solids buildup on the capillary walls.
Model 329-1 is identical to Model 329-2 but comes with only one constant temperature bath with 6 viscometers. Viscosity index determination, however, requires the Model 329-2.
